The idea of a futuristic 100% crypto based African city with crypto currency at the hub of all transaction life brings thoughts of Marvel’s ultra-high tech fictional country of Wakanda ruled by King T’challa, aka the super hero Black Panther. But plans for such a city are already in the works and it seems to actually be quite achievable.
Senegalese Grammy Award winning singer, Akon, has already begun developing a city on the 2000 acres of land gifted to him by Macky Sall, Senegal’s president and when speaking on Monday the 18th of June, at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity on a panel titled “Branding Africa: Blockchain, Entrepreneurship, and Empowering the Future”, the platinum selling singer and Philanthropist, Akon, discussed his plans for “Akoin” a branded form of crypto currency that is to be used within what has been aptly named Akon Crypto City.
Although crypto currency has recently come under major scrutiny due to many cyber-attacks directed at the various crypto coins it appears that the Senegal-descended singer of twelve Billboard Top Ten Hits believes that Blockchain and crypto currency could be “the savior for Africa in many ways” due to the high security advantages.
Akon, who even before this initiative has been a major investor in the African economy with the position that he is first a businessman before a musician, owns a clothing line in New York, a diamond mine in South Africa and an African solar lighting company, but when asked about the specifics of the technology, he demurred, noting “I come up with the concepts and let the geeks figure it out”.
Akon Crypto City, already in development, beginning with the original 2000 acres already gifted to Akon is within 5 minutes of the new International Airport, close to the coast and a short drive from Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, which also happens to be Akon’s Hometown.
The city blends leading Smart City planning designs with a blank canvas for cryptonizing our daily human and business exchanges, towards inventing a radical new way of existence.
An Extensive website for Akoin shows a mock up image of an app that would handle Akoin withdrawals, deposits and transfers, along with financial services like micro loans, social media outlets and user generated content. This initiative has even been compared to what is being planned in the Marshall Islands, where the US Government signed a law replacing the US Dollar with its own sovereign cryptocurrency earlier in 2018.
