Kogi aims for AfDB’s multi-billion-dollar food security initiative

The Kogi State administration has announced that discussions with the African Development Bank (AfDB) are at an advanced stage regarding a multi-billion-dollar initiative designed to enhance food production and security within the state.

Timothy Ojomah, the Commissioner for Agriculture, revealed this during a conversation with reporters in Lokoja on Monday, emphasizing that the government is methodically facilitating negotiations to secure the project and elevate agricultural output across all 21 local government areas.

“This is the reason we are engaging with the president of AfDB, who has given us assurances. We are assessing what we can obtain and are optimistic about our eligibility.

“We are discussing a multi-billion-dollar initiative that will be implemented in Kogi for the advantage of our numerous farmers.

“The AfDB president has guaranteed us support. It revolves around the value chain because, in many of our agricultural endeavors, we ensure that we optimize the entire value chain. Otherwise, we would not achieve significant benefits,” stated the commissioner.

He expressed concern regarding the adverse effects of drought in 2024, acknowledging its impact on the state’s anticipated agricultural productivity, noting that farmers faced weeks of drought from August to September, followed by an early cessation of rainfall in the first week of November.

“However, we are grateful that despite these obstacles, Kogi experienced an increase in food production and security in 2024, thanks to the government’s dedication and backing of farmers through various incentives. ”

Ojomah conveyed hope that discussions with the AfDB, World Bank, and Chinese enterprises would facilitate large-scale food production in the state this year.

He praised Governor Ahmed Ododo for his swift response to the ministry’s requests in supporting farmers in their endeavors and dedication to agriculture.
