Ethiopia Accuses Egypt Of Plans to Obstruct Launch of Mega Dam

The CEO of Ethiopia Electric Power, Asheber Balcha, has accused Egypt of “scrambling to create obstacles” ahead of the launch of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest hydroelectric power project. It’s been a source of controversy in the region, with Egypt and other neighboring states relying heavily on the Nile River on which the dam is built.
Balcha’s statement comes as diplomatic tensions have grown in the past few weeks. During a visit to Uganda, Egypt’s foreign minister said his country has got “existential concerns” about “water security” and will pursue “all necessary measures under international law”.
Ethiopia has insisted the dam does not affect “downstream countries” and that it supports development in the region.
