Kabila ‘Surfaces In Eastern DR Congo’ After Losing Immunity

Former President Joseph Kabila has reportedly traveled to Goma, a city in eastern DRC currently controlled by M23 rebels. Corneille Nangaa, the political leader of AFC/M23, welcomed Kabila’s return in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the former president “made the right choice” by returning rather than staying in what he described as “forced exile.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Senate has overwhelmingly voted to revoke Kabila’s honorary immunity amid allegations of his support for the Rwanda-backed M23 group, which has taken control of parts of the country’s mineral-rich eastern region.
Out of the total, 88 senators supported lifting his immunity, while five voted against and three abstained. President Félix Tshisekedi has accused Kabila—who has been abroad since 2023—of collaborating with M23 to undermine national stability. Kabila was not present during the Senate session.
