Zimbabwe’s New Broadcasting Law Slammed as ‘Pauperising’ Citizens

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has strongly criticized Zimbabwe’s newly enacted Broadcasting Services Amendment Act, labeling it “draconian” and “anti-citizen.” The legislation, signed into law by President Mnangagwa, mandates that motorists must first obtain a ZBC TV and radio license before they can renew their vehicle licenses with ZINARA or purchase vehicle insurance.
Posting on X, Chamisa condemned the measure as an added burden on ordinary Zimbabweans, who already face costs for ZINARA fees, tolls, and insurance. He accused the government of impoverishing citizens while using the state broadcaster to push partisan agendas.
Despite calls from the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zimbabwe for the Information Ministry to revise the bill in line with public input, authorities moved forward with its implementation. Many Zimbabweans view the law as unfairly targeting drivers while exempting the rest of the population.
