NoViolet Bulawayo has been awarded the Best of Caine award, an honorary prize marking the 25th anniversary of the Caine Prize for African Writing.

The book, which won the 2011 Caine prize, follows a group of six children who sneak into an affluent neighbourhood in Budapest to steal guavas. The judges praised the short story’s “powerful language, distinctive tone of voice, and bold and compelling storytelling”.

Since its inception, The Caine Prize has been known for fostering and promoting African literature, providing writers with opportunities for exposure and professional development.
