What’s Next For Kenya Haiti Mission After UN Vote?
The decision of the UN Security Council to swap the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission to Haiti with a Gang Suppression Force (GFS) has raised questions about whether the hundreds of Kenyan police officers deployed in the violence-ravaged country will remain there or join the GFS.
Unlike the previous mission, which largely supported the Haitian National Police, the GSF will operate under a Chapter VII mandate of the UN, enabling the force to conduct counter-gang operations, secure key infrastructure, and restore state control.
The U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, praised Kenya and other contributors to the MSS for their sacrifices, but said the force “lacked the scale, scope, and resources” to dismantle Haiti’s armed gangs.
