President Bola Tinubu Sacks Chief of Defense Staff and other Principal Security Officers: a National Security Reshuffling

In a move that indicates both political recalibration and the urgency in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity, President Bola Tinubu has discharged the nation’s top military chiefs and appointed new leaders to steer the armed forces.

The announcement, which was delivered on Friday, October 24, by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, marks one of Tinubu’s boldest decisions since assuming office. It is part of what the presidency describes as a strategic effort to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.

Under the sweeping changes, General Olufemi Oluyede assumes the role of Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa. Major-General W. Shaibu becomes the new Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke takes command as Chief of Air Staff. Rear Admiral I. Abbas steps in as Chief of Naval Staff, with Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retaining his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

In his statement, President Tinubu extended gratitude to the outgoing officers for what he called their patriotic service and dedicated leadership, while urging the new chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them.

A lot of Nigerians see the reshuffling shake-up as an administrative reorganization that promises to restore stability in a country grappling with insurgency, banditry, rampant kidnapping and regional unrest. The appointments are also being read as a political balancing act, touching the delicate lines of regional representation, military morale and civilian oversight.

Within the walls of Defence Headquarters, the transition reportedly brings both apprehension and renewed hope.
