Opposition Sidelined In Burundi Parliamentary Election

Burundians have cast their votes in a parliamentary election widely expected to be dominated by the ruling party, following the exclusion of the main opposition group, the National Freedom Council (CNL).
The CNL, which finished second in the 2020 elections amid claims of widespread fraud, was suspended in 2023 by the Interior Ministry over alleged procedural violations in its meetings.
Observers suggest the election is likely to further entrench the ruling party’s control, despite growing domestic criticism over economic mismanagement and political suppression.
