Can Botswana Survive Its Political and Economic Reckoning?

The fall of former president Mokgweetsi Masisi, who was defeated by a landslde in the 2024 election, was not merely a political upset; it was a rupture in Botswana’s political DNA, writes Daniel Tineyi Makokera in an AllAfrica guest column.
Makokera said for decades the former ruling Botswana Democratic Party was synonymous with stability and “economic prudence”. Beneath the surface, however, was simmering discontent – “over inequality, youth unemployment, and a perception that the country’s vast mineral wealth was not trickling down”.
