The World Food Programme (WFP) has raised alarm over the worsening food insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and nearby countries as violence intensified in 2024. The long-standing conflict in the DRC escalated significantly this year, with M23 rebels taking over the cities of Goma in North Kivu and Bukavu in South Kivu. The humanitarian situation has been compounded by outbreaks of anthrax and mpox in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions.

According to WFP, 7.9 million people in the eastern provinces are facing food insecurity, with a total of 28 million in need across the DRC. The latest wave of violence and displacement has severely disrupted food production in the Grand Nord region. Additionally, the closure of Goma’s airport—a key hub for humanitarian aid delivery—has further hampered relief efforts.

WFP is calling for $433 million to fund emergency operations in the DRC and is also seeking further financial support to maintain aid efforts in neighboring countries including Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania through 2025 and beyond.
