An aid convoy carrying life-saving aid to famine-stricken North Darfur was ambushed, killing five Sudanese humanitarian workers and injuring several more.

While waiting for clearance, the convoy, which was run by UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP), was attacked 80 kilometers from El Fasher after traveling more than 1,800 kilometers from Port Sudan. Critical humanitarian supplies meant for hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons who were in danger of famine were damaged in the attack.

WFP and UNICEF reminded the world community that aid must be able to go safely in accordance with humanitarian law and denounced the attack on the combined humanitarian convoy. One of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in the world has been brought on by the war, which started more than two years ago.
