Liberian Opposition Show Support For Former Speaker Koffa, Others

Several opposition leaders, including former President George Weah, have condemned the arrest of former Speaker Fonati Koffa and other lawmakers, who were jailed on Friday, June 6, over alleged involvement in the December 2024 arson attack on the Capitol Building—the seat of the national legislature.
Weah appeared at the Monrovia City Court on Monday, accompanied by hundreds of supporters, ahead of Koffa’s court appearance. Koffa and the other accused were later granted bail.
Koffa had stepped down last month following a prolonged legislative conflict, as some lawmakers pushed to have him removed from office. The Capitol Building was set ablaze during the height of the political standoff between his supporters and opponents.
