President Yoweri Museveni has been officially nominated by the ruling National Resistance Movement as the party’s candidate in the January 2026 presidential election. Museveni, 81, is seeking to extend his 40-year rule. He addressed a crowd of supporters after the nomination process, promising to improve the country’s economy.

His main challenger, former musician Bobi Wine, is expected to get nominated on Wednesday as the candidate of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP). The NUP has called on its supporters to “come out in large numbers.”

President Museveni has said this would be his last run for the presidency, a promise critics say he has made before.
