Namibia Holds First Remembrance Day for Genocide by German Army

Genocide Remembrance Day honors the tragic period between 1904 and 1908 when colonial German forces brutally killed tens of thousands of Herero and Nama people who had risen up against colonial rule in what is now Namibia.
For many years, Germany denied responsibility for the atrocities, only officially acknowledging in 2021 that its settlers had carried out a genocide.
According to the government, the annual commemorations are intended to mark “the beginning of a national journey of healing.”
