The government has said the move is part of a “broader stabilization and reconciliation strategy” intended to ensure the local administration in the Gedo region “truly reflects the will of the people and works in partnership with the central government”.

This decision came after Somalia’s central government publicly declared that it does not acknowledge the legitimacy of the president of Jubbaland in southern Somalia, where the Gedo administrative region is located.

Officials say the new Gedo administration will operate independently of Kismayo, the capital of autonomous Jubbaland.
