Sudan Statement by U.S. & Three Arab States – Step Towards Peace?

The September 12 statement by the Quartet countries – the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt – following a meeting in Washington, DC, “has stirred-up the desire of the Sudanese people to bring peace to the country,” says Dabanga journalist Abdelmoneim Madibo. “The statement pointed out that there is no military solution to the war in Sudan,” Madibo reports, and “called for a humanitarian truce for three months, followed by a permanent ceasefire, followed by the launch of an inclusive and transparent transition process that will culminate within nine months with the establishment of an independent civilian government based on legitimacy.”
“This Quad position fully aligns with the African Union and IGAD Roadmaps for peace in Sudan,” the African Union and the regional grouping IGAD said in a joint press release.
“Time is short,” according to Crisis Group expert Alan Boswell. “But for the first time since April 2023, the actors most able to end Sudan’s nightmare have agreed to do so. Now they need to make good on their pledge.”
