Accra to welcome the world for a landmark celebration of rhythm, identity, and unity

ACCRA, Ghana – This December, Ghana’s capital will pulse to the beat of hip-hop as Accra hosts the inaugural Talking Drums Festival, a two-day, 48-hour non-stop celebration of rhythm, creativity, and connection between Africa and its global diaspora. Scheduled for December 29 -30, 2025, the festival promises to bring together more than 40 artists from across the U.S., U.K., and Africa, uniting generations and geographies through a shared sound and story.

Positioned as an afro-diaspora celebration of hip-hop culture, the Talking Drums Festival aims to highlight not only the music but the movement — tracing hip-hop’s deep African roots and its powerful evolution into a global language of resistance, style, and storytelling.

“For over 50 years, hip-hop has influenced not just music fans but entire creative industries. The Talking Drums Festival will celebrate that impact by uniting the sound’s rhythm with the performers’ energy and the passion of the fans, showing its connection to Africa and its global dominance” – said Ruddy Kwakye, Executive Producer of the festival.

Hip-hop’s return to its ancestral home speaks to more than just entertainment. The festival reflects a generational shift in how African and diaspora communities see themselves not as separate entities, but as part of a shared creative continuum. By reclaiming the drum as its symbol, one of humanity’s oldest storytelling tools, the festival emphasizes how rhythm links continents, identities and histories.

To most of the local families and young people, the event also signals opportunity. With Ghana’s creative economy growing rapidly, the festival is expected to boost tourism, hospitality, and small businesses, while offering exposure and inspiration to local artists. Its cultural workshops, pop-up markets, and youth forums will likely create intergenerational dialogue about music, entrepreneurship and identity.

A national and diaspora partnership: the festival’s multi-year partnership with the Black Star Experience, a national branding initiative under Ghana’s government, connects it to the country’s broader mission to position itself as a hub for diaspora reconnection. Building on the success of the “Beyond the Return” campaign, which drew thousands of African descendants to the country, the initiative continues to weave art, music, tourism, and heritage into a single narrative of homecoming and renewal.

Rex Owusu Marfo, Presidential Coordinator for the Black Star Experience said that –“Ghana’s esteemed reputation as the Culture Capital of Africa, has firmly established it as a destination for global experiences. Our dynamic musical heritage and creative vibrancy make Ghana the ideal host for this celebration of hip-hop, a genre that continues to shape and energize cultures worldwide”.

The Talking Drums is a beat-tool of Africa that connects continents more than just a festival. Talking Drums are a statement that Africa is not only the birthplace of rhythm but also the future of global music.

As Accra prepares for the world’s arrival, the event promises to blend family-friendly festivities with cross-cultural collaboration, where the talking drum becomes both instrument and metaphor: a conversation between continents, generations and dreams. In one statement – the Talking Drums never forget where it came from. Now, the world is listening again.
