The Russia-affiliated Wagner Group has announced its departure from Mali after operating there for over three years. However, Russia continues to maintain a military presence in the country through the Africa Corps.

Wagner claimed its objectives in Mali had been achieved, stating that it had assisted in restoring control of all regional centers to the Malian military junta. The group entered the country following Mali’s expulsion of French and UN forces.

Africa Corps—believed to be composed of 70–80% former Wagner members—was formed after Wagner’s failed rebellion against Russia’s military leadership and the subsequent death of its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
