Senator Ireti Kingibe has dumped the\u00a0Labour Party<\/a>\u00a0(LP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).<\/p>\n

Kingibe, who represents the, Federal Capital (FCT), speaking to journalists in a viral video seen by The Nation, said he has chosen ADC because of the division in the Labour Party (LP).<\/p>\n

She said her formal defection would be marked with fanfare at the appropriate time.<\/p>\n

Responding to a question, Kingibe said: \u201cI\u2019m totally and completely committed to ADC. But obviously, as the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, don\u2019t expect me to just take a lunch break and go and collect card. I want to do so with noise and fanfare.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if she was satisfied with the leadership of ADC and the coalition she was joining, she said, \u201cIt\u2019s something that is evolving. So you cannot say while your child is still crawling that you are not happy with how he\u2019s going to run. You wait. We are growing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding to concerns that her defection might cost her the senate seat based on constitutional provisions, Kingibe said the Labour Party has since been split into two factions, a situation which, she argued, legally allowed her to move.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ask you to please read the constitution. There are two factions clearly of Labour Party. The perfect definition that the constitution gives for somebody to decamp without penalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you say I should stay in Labour Party. Which faction of Labour Party do you want me to stay in?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are two clear distinct ones. Even INEC got two sets of results and candidates, though they didn\u2019t accept any. There\u2019s no question of that.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven the time when we didn\u2019t have two clear factions, did you see anybody implementing it?<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I do follow the law. And if there were not two distinct factions of Labour Party, I would not presume to decamp, because that is unconstitutional. But they are.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this is the definition that the constitution gave why it would be okay to decamp to anywhere I wanted to go to. I just chose ADC,\u201d Kingibe said.<\/p>\n

Kingibe was one of the political figures spotted at the unveiling of ADC as the platform of the opposition coalition in Abuja on July 2.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
