That’s because engineers from the United States have found self-destruct buttons inside Chinese solar panels, and these buttons were never reported. The news didn’t just catch people off guard, it set off serious alarm bells. For some experts, it might be just the kind of spark that pushes global tensions into something much bigger.

What was actually found in these solar panels?

It all started with a Reuters report that spoke with U.S. energy and security experts. What did they uncover? Something no one saw coming: Chinese-made solar gear packed with so-called “ghost functions.” The whole thing came to light after tech specialists cracked open inverters and found hidden devices inside, capable of dodging firewalls and possibly taking control remotely. Kinda chilling to read, right? Now, picture the reaction in Washington… These hidden systems were never disclosed in any product documentation, which raises serious red flags. If they can slip that past regulators, what else could be embedded without anyone noticing?

To break it down: someone sitting halfway across the world could, in theory, hit a switch and take down a chunk of a country’s energy supply. “Okay, but how bad could that be?” you might ask. Well… pretty bad. We’re talking about grid failures and millions left in the dark. And here’s the kicker: it’s not just the U.S. dealing with this. The UK and a lot of European countries also rely on Chinese-made inverters and batteries. No one’s confirmed the same devices hiding over there – yet. But just the possibility? That’s more than enough to raise eyebrows.

Do we need to prepare for a Third World War?

We need to understand that when there is the possibility of having foreign control, even if remote, over a country’s energy matrix, this is no longer a technical or renewable energy issue, but rather a geopolitical one. And that is where the situation becomes more serious and delicate, leaving the hands of scientists and researchers. According to Mike Rogers, former director of the US National Security Agency:

“We know that China believes there is value in putting at least some elements of our core infrastructure at risk of destruction or disruption. I believe the Chinese are, in part, hoping that widespread use of inverters will limit the West’s options for addressing the security issue”

And yeah, there’s a reason for that concern. Chinese companies crank out over half of the world’s solar inverters. That kind of dominance isn’t just about business, it can easily turn into a geopolitical lever. Especially now, with China cozying up to Russia in what some are calling the most strategic alliance in years. No wonder the U.S. is on edge.

How will countries respond to this threat?

Well, so far, no Western government has given an official response. However, the US Department of Energy said that there are still challenges in ensuring that all the functionalities of imported equipment are properly documented and reinforced that suppliers need to list all components and software of the products.

In the UK, some leaders have called for an immediate pause in the energy transition from Chinese components. They want all installations to be reviewed to ensure that there is no risk. As if this scenario were not already alarming or enough, recently, a country has already declared war on China, only this time it was because of some electric vehicles that are at risk of disappearing after some changes.

Source:
