Ghana\u2019s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the temporary closure of the country\u2019s embassy in Washington, D.C., following an investigation into alleged visa fraud. The decision came after an audit uncovered a five-year scheme involving a locally hired staff member and accomplices.<\/p>\n
The scam involved unauthorized links added to the embassy\u2019s website, which redirected visa and passport applicants to a private company charging inflated fees. The extra charges were then pocketed by those involved. In response, the foreign ministry recalled its diplomatic staff from Washington and suspended all local employees at the embassy.<\/p>\n
The case has been referred to the attorney-general for potential prosecution and recovery of the illicit funds.
