The islands were carved out to form the British Indian Ocean Territory, enabling the construction of a strategic military base on Diego Garcia in partnership with the <span class=\"whitespace-normal\">United States<\/span>. Between the late 1960s and early 1970s, thousands of Chagossians were forcibly removed from their homeland to make way for the base. Decades later, many still live in poverty in Mauritius and the Seychelles, cut off from ancestral land and identity. Recent attempts by some Chagossians to resettle parts of the archipelago without official approval, highlight the unresolved trauma; and the urgency of their demands for justice, compensation and the right of return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1790\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Economically, control over the islands carries significant weight. The surrounding waters are rich in fisheries and may hold untapped marine and mineral resources. Regarding Mauritius, reclaiming sovereignty could strengthen its blue economy ambitions, and expand its exclusive economic zone. A landmark 2019 advisory opinion by the <span class=\"whitespace-normal\">International Court of Justice<\/span> declared that the UK\u2019s continued administration of the islands is unlawful, a position later reinforced by maritime rulings. In 2025, London agreed in principle to transfer sovereignty to Mauritius while leasing back Diego Garcia for military use. Though, the agreement has stalled amid domestic opposition in the UK and strategic concerns from Washington, particularly under <span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Donald Trump<\/span>, who has questioned the implications for regional security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2390\" data-end=\"2734\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">This geopolitical tug-of-war highlights the broader stakes: the Indian Ocean remains a critical theater for global military and trade routes. For many citizens, reclaiming the Chagos Islands is about restoring dignity as much as territory. Nevertheless, the terms of any final agreement, particularly restrictions on resettlement and the long-term lease of Diego Garcia, have sparked debate about whether true decolonization can coexist with continued foreign military presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3210\" data-end=\"3568\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">As negotiations stall, Mauritius has vowed to spare no effort in completing the process.
