The family of former President Edgar Lungu, who passed away in South Africa on June 5, has stated that it was his explicit wish for current President Hakainde Hichilema to stay away from his remains.

Tensions have intensified as the family accuses the government of trying to override their funeral plans and disregarding Lungu’s final wishes. The two leaders had remained political adversaries up until Lungu’s death.

While the government proposed a state funeral at an official lodge in Lusaka, Lungu’s party, the Patriotic Front, is demanding the ceremony be held at their party headquarters. The family has also insisted on having a say in who will officiate the service.
