In KARUR – India, what was meant to be a moment of political celebration in Tamil Nadu has turned into a devastating human tragedy. At least 39 people, including nine children, lost their lives in a stampede during a rally for actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur district on Saturday, officials confirmed. More than 50 others remain injured, many battling for survival in hospitals across the region.
The rally had drawn tens of thousands, eager to see Vijay, one of southern India’s most popular film stars whose political debut has electrified supporters. But the event descended into chaos when the packed crowd surged forward, triggering a deadly crush. Television images showed people fainting and being carried away as overwhelmed security struggled to regain control.
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who rushed to the district, described the incident as heartbreaking beyond words. He confirmed that among the dead were 17 women, 13 men, and nine children. The state government announced a compensation package of one million rupees ($11,300) for each bereaved family and promised a judicial inquiry into the causes of the tragedy. To families, the compensation is little solace. Outside a Karur hospital, one man spoke in anguish to reporters: “My brother’s two children were there. The elder one passed away, the younger one is missing. My sister-in-law is in the ICU. What should I do?” His grief echoes across households now left shattered.
