A sudden pause in one of the world’s most dangerous crises, has offered a narrow window for diplomacy and a momentary reprieve for global markets, after the US President Donald Trump announced a conditional two-week ceasefire with Iran, based on Iran’s agreement to open the Strait, late Tuesday.

The announcement came just hours before a self-imposed US deadline, for expanded military action, capping days of escalating rhetoric and intensifying strikes across the Middle East. At the centre of the agreement, lies a single but critical artery of the global economy, the Strait of Hormuz. This is a brink averted for now.

In a brief evening statement, President Trump said Washington would “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks”, contingent on Tehran’s immediate reopening of the narrow waterway, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply flows. The ultimatum followed stark warnings earlier in the day, when Trump suggested catastrophic consequences if Iran failed to comply. Even then, by nightfall, a diplomatic opening, reportedly encouraged by intermediaries including Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, had shifted the trajectory away from immediate escalation.
