Nigeria’s Security Offensive – Over 300 Bandits Eliminated in Massive Zamfara Operation
In a decisive blow to criminal networks in northwestern Nigeria, security forces have successfully neutralised more than 300 members of kidnapping and cattle rustling gangs. The intensive two-day operation took place in the Gumi district of Zamfara State, marking what local authorities describe as a “significant breakthrough” in the region’s ongoing struggle against violent crime.
The crackdown specifically targeted armed groups accused of orchestrating kidnappings and disrupting essential farming activities. According to local residents, the engagement was a massive undertaking involving Nigerian soldiers and community vigilantes who faced off against a force of nearly 1000 armed bandits. The gun battle reportedly continued overnight as the criminal groups attempted to relocate from their camp with hundreds of stolen cattle.

This latest offensive is part of an intensified campaign by the Nigerian military to weaken both bandit networks and jihadist groups that have plagued the country for years. This operation follows several other major successful strikes:
July Last Year: Soldiers killed at least 150 terrorists in an ambush in nearby Kebbi State as they attempted to move toward a camp in Niger State.
August Last Year: More than 100 bandits were eliminated in Zamfara’s Bukuyum local government area during a coordinated air and ground assault on a forest camp.
May This Year: A major strike resulted in the elimination of a senior Islamic State commander, signaling a dual focus on both local banditry and international terrorist networks.

The Zamfara government has hailed this week’s operation as a major milestone. For years, the region has been gripped by a security crisis characterised by kidnappings for ransom and violent attacks on rural communities. According to security reports prepared for the United Nations, these groups have significantly hampered agricultural production. By dismantling a large portion of the bandit force in Gumi, the military aims to restore stability and protect the livelihoods of local residents.
