On August 6, 2026, the Theatre Arts Quadrangle at the University of Ghana transformed into a vibrant hub of artistic expression for “The Arts Takeover,” the highly anticipated art competition of the annual Association of Students of Performing Arts (ASPA) Week Celebration. Students, art enthusiasts, and spectators gathered in high numbers, creating6 an electric atmosphere as rising visual artists put their speed, focus, and technical skills to the test.
Guided by industry heavyweights, Pan-African Art Ambassador and acclaimed Art Director Prince Kojo-Hilton, alongside Scenic Designer Napoleon Mensah, the competition challenged contestants to push beyond conventional studio practice. Designed to test real-world readiness, the contest presented young creators with two distinct, high-pressure exercises.
The first phase, The Quick Sketching Drill, demanded rapid observation and fluid technique. Contestants raced against a relentless timer to capture the kinetic energy and form of a live model dancer moving rhythmically to music. This was followed by The Still Life Session, a rigorous test of compositional precision, form, and delicate shading, using artistically arranged product displays provided by the eventโs sponsors.
The caliber of work delivered by the contestants left both the instructors and the spellbound crowd astounded. Spectators remained glued to the action throughout, witnessing visual draftsmanship and live performance merge seamlessly in real time. Demonstrating the extraordinary talent on display, the final evaluation yielded an unprecedented result: a dead-heat tie for both first and second place positions, a testament to the incredible preparation and determination of these young artists.
