Residents of Ebinpejo Village in Lanlate, Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State are gradually returning to normal life after a frightening kidnapping incident that once again exposed the growing security concerns facing many rural communities across the state.

The Oyo State Police Command successfully rescued two abducted children and arrested four suspected kidnappers following a coordinated security operation that culminated in a gun battle inside a forest hideout where the victims were being held.

The incident occurred on Friday, June 27, 2026, when armed hoodlums reportedly stormed Ebinpejo Village, invading several homes, assaulting residents, and creating panic among families. During the attack, the gunmen forcefully abducted two children before escaping into the surrounding forest, leaving the community in fear and uncertainty.

The attack highlights the increasing vulnerability of rural settlements in parts of Oyo State, where communities located near forests have become attractive targets for kidnapping gangs and other criminal groups. Beyond the immediate trauma suffered by victims, such attacks continue to disrupt farming activities, local commerce, school attendance, and the overall sense of safety that sustains rural livelihoods.

Following a distress call, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, ordered an immediate rescue operation. A joint security team comprising police operatives, personnel of the Amotekun Corps, local vigilantes, and community hunters was mobilised to pursue the kidnappers.

According to the Police Command, security operatives relied on credible intelligence and technical support to trace the suspects to a hideout deep inside an Ibarapa forest. On sighting the advancing security team, the kidnappers reportedly opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. The superior coordination of the joint security forces eventually overwhelmed the criminal gang, forcing some members to flee while others were apprehended.

Both abducted children were rescued alive during the operation. One of the victims sustained injuries while in captivity but received prompt medical attention before both children were safely reunited with their family, bringing relief to relatives and residents who had anxiously awaited news of the rescue.

Security operatives arrested four principal suspects believed to be members of the kidnapping syndicate. They also recovered sophisticated firearms and ammunition allegedly used by the group, a development that security analysts say underscores the growing sophistication and firepower of criminal networks operating in forested areas.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed that the arrested suspects are assisting investigators with valuable information aimed at tracking down other fleeing members of the gang and dismantling the wider criminal network behind the operation.

The latest rescue has renewed conversations about the evolving security landscape in Oyo State and across parts of southwest Nigeria. While the successful operation demonstrates the value of collaboration among conventional security agencies, regional security outfits, vigilantes, and local hunters, it also reflects the persistent threat posed by kidnapping syndicates that continue to exploit remote communities and forest corridors.

In respect to most residents of Ibarapa and neighbouring communities, the psychological impact of such attacks often lingers long after victims regain their freedom. Families are forced to live with fear, farmers become reluctant to cultivate distant farmlands, businesses suffer reduced economic activity, and children face disruptions to their education due to growing concerns over personal safety.

Security experts have repeatedly stressed that sustained intelligence gathering, stronger surveillance of forest routes, improved rural policing, and closer cooperation between security agencies and local communities remain critical to preventing future attacks. Community leaders have also continued to advocate increased government investment in rural security infrastructure, rapid emergency response systems, and measures that deny criminal groups safe havens within forests.

As investigations continue, authorities say efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects and dismantle the entire kidnapping network. The Police Command has assured residents that security operations across vulnerable communities will be intensified to restore public confidence and reinforce the state’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
